History
The penitentiary system of Georgia was established under Governor Mitchell and the state prison in Milledgeville was completed in 1816. It opened in February 1817. Located on the 16 acres of penitentiary square in Milledgeville, it occupied only a small portion of the square because two academies and the county courthouse shared the site as well. It included a wing for male prisoners, prison workshops, and the principal keeper or warden's house. The first prisoner was received in March 1817.
